In Liverpool, in Tel Aviv…
When i was 14, my musical taste was completely kitsch, on the scale between Modern Talking and C.C Catch… My first encounter with quality was Suzanne Vega’s first album. I was hooked and ever since i followed every other singer that imitated her style, from Tanita Tikaram to Alanis Morisette. It’s been over 20 years and i still remember by heart the words of “Marlene on the wall”, “the queen and the soldier” and even able to do a perfect acapela performance of “Tom’s diner” which I’m saving for some electricity-cut-in-a-Karaoke-bar opportunity….
Suzanne Vega is already 50 years old and her voice and looks have barely changed. On Sunday i finally got to see her preform in Tel Aviv and i forgot how much i love her. Even her new song “New York is a woman” was love at first sound. She gave two performances in a row that day and I’m happy i went to the second, since we got a second encore with “in Liverpool” that was sorely missed by the audience of the early show. Even though I caught her in Zdar Nad Sazavou (Czeck Republic) – I wish I could be there instead. The crowd in Zdar was a tough crowd, I’m sure Suzanne felt better in Israel [a drop of National pride here, accompanied by yet another: "We love you, Suzanne!" ]
